Nadir Larbaoui: From international handball player to Algeria’s diplomatic powerhouse

Mohamed Ennadir Larbaoui, known as Nadir Larbaoui, is a familiar name in Algeria’s diplomatic and sports circles. Previously a lawyer, international handball player, and diplomat, Larbaoui’s impressive career has been the subject of many discussions.

His recent appointment as the Director of the Cabinet of the Presidency of the Republic is expected to bring his extensive diplomatic experience to bear on critical domestic and international issues. This move is anticipated to fortify Algeria’s international standing and foster deeper diplomatic relations with other nations.

Under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s leadership, Algeria is bracing for a renewed phase of diplomatic engagement and strategic decision-making, with Larbaoui, a seasoned diplomat, at the helm. The country eagerly awaits the fruits of Larbaoui’s appointment, hoping it will promote its interests and solidify its role in international affairs.

The Wikipedia page dedicated to Nadir Larbaoui informs that he assumed the role of Algeria’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations in New York in September 2021 and succeeded Aïmene Benabderrahmane as Prime Minister on November 11, 2023.

Born in Tébessa to a father who was a former National Liberation Army mujahid, Larbaoui is a married man and a proud father of two girls. He began his professional journey in law, joining the Algerian bar and later transitioning into diplomacy with the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Throughout his extensive diplomatic career, Larbaoui has held several key positions, including ambassador to Pakistan, director general of legal and consular affairs, and director of the Maghreb. In addition, he has served as a director of international economic relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, an Algerian representative at the Arab Maghreb Union’s Rabat general secretariat, a member of the board of directors of the Maghreb Center for Studies and Research, and finally, ambassador to Cairo.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune selected Nadir Larbaoui, his cabinet director, to be the country’s new prime minister, according to a statement from the presidency, replacing Aymen BenAbderrahmane, who was appointed in 2021.

Mohamed-Nadir Larbaoui has recently been appointed as the new Director of the Cabinet of the Presidency of the Republic by the Algerian government. His vast diplomatic experience will be a valuable asset in this pivotal role.

Larbaoui has proven his diplomatic prowess multiple times, most notably as Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. His key roles have also included acting as Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the Arab League of Member States and as Algeria’s Ambassador to Egypt.

Among his significant achievements is steering the Algerian negotiators during the finalisation of the Convention on the delimitation of maritime borders with Tunisia, which was signed in Algiers on July 11, 2011, following Abdelaziz Khellef’s departure.

He also demonstrated his leadership skills as the Director General of Legal and Consular Affairs, overseeing the National Commission responsible for repatriating foreign nationals who had sought asylum in Algeria following the overthrow of Colonel Maamar El Gaddafi in Libya.

Larbaoui’s diplomatic achievements extend beyond these roles. He served as the Ambassador to Pakistan and was a vital member of the board of directors at the Maghreb Center for Studies and Research. His diplomatic successes are a testament to his exceptional abilities when dealing with Makhzen officials.
