Ryan Murphy, the creator of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” has disclosed what might prompt him to create more episodes. The Netflix series has recently sparked both popularity and controversy online, with viewers showing mixed reactions to the narrative.
Murphy currently has no plans for a second season but hasn’t ruled out revisiting the story. The show chronicles a 1990s crime where brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez killed their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, in 1989. They were convicted and sentenced to life without parole.
During their trial, the Menendez brothers asserted they had endured years of parental abuse, which they claimed led to the murders. Prosecutors, however, argued that the motive was to gain the family fortune. With the brothers in prison, the case seemed resolved. However, a court hearing has been scheduled, with Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón considering new evidence regarding the abuse allegations.

Murphy has hinted at continuing the series, provided Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch return as Lyle and Erik. Speaking to Variety, he said, “I think what I would be interested in doing, if Nicholas [Alexander Chavez] and Cooper [Koch] would agree to do it, is maybe one or two episodes that continue the story.”
The new hearing might raise questions about the original trial, but no decisions have been made yet. The case regained public attention after the Netflix drama’s release last month. Kim Kardashian also penned an essay advocating for the brothers’ release. Initially, Murphy stated he didn’t want to engage in the justice conversation, yet he now finds himself an unlikely supporter.
He remarked, “We gave them their moment in the court of public opinion. Basically, we did give them a platform.” Murphy expressed hope for the brothers’ release by Christmas, adding, “I really believe that.” Discussing the challenges of addressing ongoing issues, Murphy shared, “It’s dangerous, yet exhilarating, to tackle things that are current.”
