MPs forming task force for CS vetting – Wetang’ula

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has assembled a team of Members of Parliament to spearhead the crucial vetting process for the recently nominated Cabinet Secretaries (CSs). 

In a statement shared on his X account on July 25, 2024, Wetang’ula stated that to ensure transparency, accountability and efficiency in selecting and appointing CSs, he had set up a team that would strictly adhere to legal frameworks and provide a good selection of the most qualified candidates.

“I have urged the Committee Members to prepare for extensive and meticulous scrutiny of the candidates, emphasizing strict adherence to legal frameworks, particularly Chapter 6 of the Constitution concerning leadership and integrity, to ensure the selection of the most qualified candidates for the positions”

Vetting task force

According to the speaker, he noted that he will be chairing the Committee and Uasin Gishu Women Rep Gladys Shollei, will be deputising him.

The committee members will comprise various leaders and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah will be among those in the sitting.

Other committee members who will assist in the vetting process include;  Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah, Hon. Anthony Kimani, Hon. Owen Baya Yaa, Hon. Robert Mbui, Hon. Wachira, Hon. Rahab Mukami, Hon. Dido Ali Raso, Hon. Gitonga Murugara, Hon. David Gikaria, Hon. Ferdinand Wanyonyi, Hon. Mary Emaase, Hon. Rahim Dawood, Hon. Junet Mohammed, Hon. Caleb Amisi, Hon. Stephen Mule, Hon. Nelson Koech, Hon. Abdi Shurie, Hon. Naisula Lesuuda, Hon. David Pkosing, and Hon. Mishi Mboko.

A notable change as communicated by Wetang’ula was that the former member of the Committee, Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, will no longer participate in the vetting process, but instead will appear before the Committee.

“Notably, Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, who was previously a member of the Committee, will not participate in the vetting process but will instead appear before the Committee for his vetting,” the read the statement in part.

Dates set for vetting nominees

In addition, the speaker revealed that the National Assembly’s Committee on Appointments was a team tasked with vetting Cabinet Secretary appointees as submitted by the President, H.E Dr William Samoei Ruto, in accordance with Section 8 of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act of 2011.

On Thursday, July 25, 2024, a notice by the National Assembly noted that the CS nominees will be vetted from Thursday, August 1, 2024, and will conclude on Sunday, August 4, 2024.

The CS nominees will be expected to meet the Committee on Appointments at the Mini-Chamber, County Hall, Parliament Buildings starting from 8.00 am.
