In a heartbreaking scene, Ann Wanjiru was violently manhandled and thrown into a police vehicle while peacefully protesting in Nairobi CBD on Thursday, July 25, 2024.
Ann was holding a portrait of her 21-year-old son Evans Kiratu.
He died after allegedly being struck by a tear gas canister in his groin during the protests. He was rushed taken to Kenyatta National Hospital by well-wishers. And he was treated for severe injuries and internal bleeding.
Despite the urgent care, Kiratu passed away around 12 p.m. on June 21.
During the arrest, the grieving mother wept and pleaded, “You killed my son, and now you are grabbing me,”
Unbothered, the police continued their arrest, ignoring her desperate cries. And this incident comes amid concerns of police brutality against protesters.
