Britons are enjoying an unexpected spell of warm weather, but the Met Office has issued a warning about heavy rain set to arrive this weekend. September has been mild so far, with 49.5mm of rainfall and limited sunshine. As summer ends, weather forecasters predict wintry conditions will start this weekend.

A flood warning is in effect for the North Sea coast at Hornsea due to unusually high tides expected to cause flooding tomorrow morning between 5.45am and 7.15am. Coastal roads, footpaths along Hornsea seafront, and properties on Marine Drive, South Promenade, Hornsea Burton Road, Stream Dike, and Foss Beck are most at risk.

The Government’s website stated: “Tide levels will remain high for the next few days. This warning is likely to be in force for the morning tides on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We will monitor the situation and update this message accordingly. Flood gates are being closed in the area. Be cautious along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths, and roads as large waves and sea spray could be hazardous.”

The Met Office forecasts more warmth and sunshine into Thursday, with London possibly reaching 26C. Inverness enjoyed a warm 25.5C on Wednesday, 14C above the average. Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud commented: “We are enjoying almost summer’s last hurrah, but changes are coming as we approach Friday and the weekend.”

Currently, the UK is experiencing high pressure, which will shift north and east over the week, leading to “thundery showers” in southern England from Friday, Stroud explained. A “gentle decline” in temperatures is expected over the weekend, with East Anglia seeing highs of 24C on Saturday before dropping to the low 20s on Sunday.

Central and southern England, along with parts of Wales, should prepare for heavy rain this weekend, with potential weather warnings from the Met Office. Stroud predicts “successive bands of rain” and a return to “normal autumn conditions” next week. Looking ahead to October, weather maps suggest winds could increase as autumn begins. Temperatures have been above average for most of September, but the weather is expected to change with the new month.

A 350-mile-wide rainstorm is reported to be moving across Britain on Tuesday, September 24. The Met Office’s long-range forecast for late September also warns of heavy rain: “Showers or longer spells of rain, heavy and possibly thundery, will affect parts of England and Wales initially, particularly in the south and southwest, but will likely ease to the southeast early next week.”
