MERU GOVERNOR KAWIRA MWANGAZA FACES THIRD IMPEACHMENT ATTEMPT

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza is facing a third impeachment attempt after a fresh motion was tabled by the County Assembly’s deputy majority leader, Zipporah Kinya. The motion accuses Mwangaza of gross violations of the Constitution, national and county laws, and abuse of office.

This new attempt follows two earlier efforts to impeach Mwangaza, both blocked by the Senate for lack of evidence.

The first impeachment occurred in December 2022, just three months into her tenure. But the Senate overturned the resolution on December 30, 2022.

According to Kinya, the county assembly has received public petitions and statements highlighting various alleged violations and instances of abuse of office by the governor. Efforts to reconcile these issues have failed, prompting the assembly to table the new motion.

In her statement, Kinya emphasized that Mwangaza’s continued tenure has hindered efficient service delivery in Meru County and tarnished the reputation of her office, the deputy governor’s office, the assembly, and its leadership.

“Thus,” Kinya concluded, “the assembly resolves to impeach the governor under Article 181 of the Constitution, Section 33 of the County Governments Act, and Standing Order No. 65 of the Assembly’s Standing Orders.”
