McDonald’s clears beef patties in E. coli outbreak, resumes Quarter Pounders

McDonald’s has eliminated beef patties as the source of the E. coli outbreak linked to Quarter Pounder hamburgers. The outbreak has resulted in one death and nearly 75 illnesses. Chief Supply Chain Officer Cesar Pina assured that any contaminated products have been removed from their supply chain and are no longer in any McDonald’s restaurants.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture confirmed that subsamples from various lots of McDonald’s fresh and frozen beef patties tested negative for E. coli. They have completed the testing and do not expect additional samples.

McDonald’s plans to resume distributing fresh supplies of the Quarter Pounder, which should be available in all locations next week. Regulatory bodies had been probing the possibility of contamination in McDonald’s beef patties. The FDA and USDA did not immediately comment.

Proper cooking kills E. coli in beef. To mitigate risk, McDonald’s will serve Quarter Pounders without raw, slivered onions at affected locations.
