Mayor Eric Adams is set to name Acting Police Commissioner Edward Caban to the helm of the NYPD this week — marking the appointment of the city’s first top cop of Hispanic descent, The Post has learned.
Adams is expected to announce that Caban will remain the NYPD’s top cop — and drop the interim title — Monday morning at the 40th Precinct in The Bronx, where he began his 30-year career with the department, multiple sources said Sunday.
Caban was named acting commissioner of the nation’s largest police force July 1 following former top cop Keechant Sewell’s surprise resignation in June.
“Commissioner Caban is a consummate professional with over three decades of service in the NYPD,” Adams said in a statement at the time. “I know the hard-working men and women of our city’s police department have a strong leader in place until a more formal announcement is made in the coming weeks.”
The Bronxite was the first deputy commissioner of the NYPD — second in command to Sewell — before the leadership switch-up. He was promoted to the second-highest-ranking spot by Adams, a former cop himself who is close to Caban.
In his most recent role, Caban took the lead in policy development, personnel management, recruit and in-service training and overall supervision of the discipline system, according to the NYPD.
The new top cop was raised in the Bronx and joined the NYPD in 1991 when he was first assigned to the 40th Precinct. He worked his way up to sergeant in just three years and later rose to inspector.
He was accused of cheating on his sergeant’s exam nearly 30 years ago along with more than two dozen other aspiring sergeants, according to police files obtained by The Post last year.
Caban’s father Juan was an NYC Transit Police Detective who also served as the President of the Transit Police Hispanic Society at one point in his career. The new commissioner is married to Leidy Caban and has two children, Edward and Ava.
Several Hispanic lawmakers were invited to attend Adam’s Monday morning announcement, sources said.
City Hall and the NYPD didn’t immediately return requests for comment.
