Marjorie Taylor Greene slams Mike Johnson’s ‘slimy backroom deal’ with Democrats and his future as chairman is safe for now

  • “We will vote to introduce Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s motion to resign from the chair. If she invokes the motion, it will not pass.”
  • It wasn’t until Sunday that Greene, R-Ga., said Johnson’s “days are numbered” as speaker

Democrats have made it official: They will come to Speaker Mike Johnson’s aid if Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene forces her motion to oust him to the House.

On Tuesday morning, a groundbreaking email circulated among House Democrats, essentially debunking Greene’s headline-making threat: “We will vote to advance Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s motion to vacate the Chair . If she calls the motion, it will not pass.’

A successful vote to table the motion prevents a final vote from taking place.

Greene said in response that she will force a vote in the House of Representatives.

‘Mike Johnson is officially the Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives. Here is their official endorsement of his speakership. What slimy backroom deal did Johnson make for the Democrats’ support?’ she wrote on X.

“If the Democrats want to elect him chairman (and some Republicans want to support the Democrats’ chairman-elect), I will give them the opportunity to do so.”

“I strongly support recorded voting because recording Congress allows every American to see the truth and provides transparency about our votes. Americans deserve to see the Uniparty in full. I’m about to throw them their coming out party!’

She filed a motion to resign in late March and has been waiting in the wings ever since to take down the speaker.

Two other Republicans, Reps. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., joined Greene’s efforts after he injected $60 billion in Ukrainian funding into the House of Representatives.

The Democrats, meanwhile, are offering their motion in exchange for Johnson putting aside aid to Ukraine.

“I don’t think we’re giving these things away for free,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., told reporters.

“I think the vote on aid to Ukraine weighed heavily on many members of the caucus. I also think that the fact that the person making the motion is Marjorie Taylor Greene, which has also created a sense of, who are we going to vote for, that this is a difficult task for many members.”

Johnson told reporters that he had not spoken to Democrats about bailing him out and had made no agreements with them to do so.

“This is the first I’ve heard of it,” he said.

But if the Democrats want to save a Republican chairman, this could have political consequences in the long term.

Asked whether he felt comfortable being bailed out by Democrats, Johnson said: “You hope you get the support of everyone, the whole country. ..The Speaker of the House serves the entire body. I’m a conservative Republican, a lifelong conservative Republican.”

The latest motion to evacuate Parliament, which ended Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s career, left the House without speakers for three weeks. “We want to turn the page,” Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar emphasized. “We don’t want Marjorie Taylor Greene dictating the schedule.”
