Award-winning singer Mariah Carey is grieving after losing both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, on the same day over the weekend.
In a statement on Monday, Carey said, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”
Patricia Carey, 87, was a former opera singer and vocal coach. Mariah shared that she felt “blessed” to have spent time with her mother in the week before her passing. However, she asked for privacy during this difficult time and did not share any details about how her mother and sister died.
Mariah Carey Love-Hate Relationship with Mother
Mariah Carey, who was previously married to father-of-many Nick Cannon, had a complicated relationship with her mother.
In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she wrote about the pain and confusion caused by their relationship.
Mariah explained, “Professional jealousy comes with the territory of success, but when the person is your mother and the jealousy is revealed at such a tender age, it’s particularly painful.”
Despite the challenges, Mariah still loved her mother, writing, “To Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
Mariah Carey Sister Death
Alison Carey, 63, had been receiving hospice care before she passed away, according to a friend quoted by the Times Union newspaper.
Mariah and Alison were estranged, and in her memoir, Mariah said it was “emotionally and physically safer for me to not have any contact” with her sister or brother.
After the memoir’s release, Alison sued Mariah for $1.2 million, claiming it caused her “immense emotional distress.”
