Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is a doubt for Saturday’s Premier League match against Brentford.

The 18-year-old made his senior England debut against Brazil last Saturday before featuring in a man-of-the-match match against Belgium on Tuesday evening.

But Mainoo started feeling unwell earlier this week and was forced to sit out United’s training on Thursday.

However, he reported for training at Carrington on Friday and Erik ten Hag will only decide at a late stage about his involvement at the Gtech Community Stadium.

When asked about his availability, Ten Hag said on Friday: ‘I don’t know, we hope so. Today he is here, not yet fully recovered, but we still have many hours until tomorrow, with kick-off at 8 p.m.’

The midfielder has made 14 appearances in the Premier League this season and scored a crucial final goal in United’s dramatic 4-3 win against Wolves last month.

Mainoo’s meteoric rise continued with his first appearances for the England seniors during the international break, and Ten Hag said he and his coaching staff will keep the teenager’s feet on the ground in the unlikely event that success goes to his head .

“So far he is dealing with it very well and if he crosses the line then I as manager and we as coaches will intervene,” said the United boss.

Ten Hag returns to the scene of one of his lowest points as United manager when he takes on Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium after suffering a 4-0 defeat there in his second game in charge last season.

Lisandro Martinez could return after eight weeks away with a knee injury, while United will also make a late decision on Casemiro, who missed Brazil’s friendlies against England and Spain due to injury.
