Luke Littler took time to poke fun at Liverpool’s misfortunes just half an hour before facing Michael van Gerwen in the Premier League Darts final on Thursday evening.

The outspoken Manchester United fan was looking for a hat-trick of wins after claiming his first win in Belfast two weeks ago.

Last week Littler defeated Van Gerwen in the quarter-finals before sending good friend Nathan Aspinall into the semi-finals at the AO Arena in Manchester – and then won his second successive night in a barnstorming final against Gerwyn Price.

But the football fan didn’t have to think long about his second ever victory, saying in his interview afterwards that he was delighted to have secured the victory as he had just seen ‘Man United concede twice in two minutes (against Chelsea) !’

Keeping an eye on the evening’s match action again while in the competition himself, Littler couldn’t resist a sharp swipe at his side’s hated rivals on social media minutes before stepping out to the oche.

“Oh dear (emoji with monkey covering eyes),” Littler captioned an image of the 3-0 scoreline in the Reds’ Europa League match with Serie A club Atalanta.

The darts prodigy had just moments earlier completed a 6-5 semi-final victory against world number 1 Luke Humphries.

Liverpool’s Anfield may have brought a smile to some Manchester United supporters’ faces as Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered a spectacular collapse at home.

Just one matchday after their Premier League title hopes were dented by Erik ten Hag’s players in their 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, Liverpool put in a dismal home performance as they were exposed to Atalanta’s hungry and energetic play.

Goals from former West Ham outcast Gianluca Scamacca and a late third from Mario Pasalic have given the Europa League hopefuls everything to do on their return trip to Bergamo next week.

Littler’s joy on social media may have been a little premature as the 17-year-old would lose his third final in Birmingham to Van Gerwen.

The teenage sensation broke twice in the early stages of the match, but with neither player making big scores, the defending Premier League Darts champions fought back to claim the 6-3 victory.

Despite failing to complete a quick trio of wins, Littler remains at the top of the table with 26 points, two points ahead of World Cup rival Humphries.

The debutant seems confident to reach the play-offs at London’s O2 Arena, with only five match nights remaining.
