Man surrenders for questioning in connection with the stabbing of Nakuru woman

Police have arrested a man in connection with the multiple stabbing of a Nakuru woman identified as Florence Wanjiku in the Kiamunyi area.

The man is in custody after surrendering himself for questioning over the incident that has generated a heated public debate.

“Today, November 25, 2024, a male adult and a suspect in the attempted murder case of Florence Wanjiku Gichohi reported at the Menengai Police Station in the company of his lawyer- Gakuhi Chege and Associates Advocates,” police said in a statement.

Adding: “He has been re-arrested by police and placed in custody while appearing fit, pending collection by Menengai Police Station.”

This comes just days after police confirmed that handlers of Wanjiku who is currently at a hospital in Nakuru had reported the matter on Friday, November 22, 2024.

“Yesterday, 22/11/2024, a report of attempted murder against one Florence Wanjiku Gichohi was made at Kiamunyi Police Post in Nakuru after she found several stab wounds and severed hands. Preliminary investigations establish that the victim was attacked by her boyfriend, who is also her business associate. The incident happened at their rental house in Olive following domestic wrangles,” a police statement read.

In the statement, police had requested members of the public to assist with information that may lead to the arrest of Wanjiku’s boyfriend Njeru, who was also requested to present himself to the nearest police station.

“She is currently admitted to a hospital in serious condition. This matter is pending the arrest of a known person, with OCS Menengai dealing. Meanwhile, we call upon the said suspect to present himself at the nearest police station or police officer. We are also appealing to any member of the public with information that may lead to his arrest to inform the nearest police station,” police added.

Domestic wrangles

Police believe Wanjiku was severely injured by her boyfriend following domestic wrangles at the couple’s shared home in Nakuru.

The matter generated a heated public debate with Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba calling for the swift arrest of the person of interest in the case.

With the rising femicide cases in the country, President William Ruto on November 20, 2024, met a section of women leaders in the country and allocated Ksh100 million to be used during a public awareness campaign dubbed 16 Days of Activism which begins today November 25, 2024.

“Matters psychological support and safe spaces for women and children are a priority in my office. Through the women’s rights advisor, we are launching a safe home safe space campaign during the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence that will start on November 25, 2024,” Ruto noted.
