A road accident claimed the life of a 63 year old man when his car collided with the rear of a 10,000-litre fuel tanker yesterday at 5.30am on the motorway in Chon Buri Province.
At the crash site near the Khaolam interchange at kilometre marker 80+800 on the inbound lane to Bangkok, authorities found a wrecked Nissan Sunny with Bangkok plates, its front end completely crumpled against the fuel tanker’s rear. The driver of the sedan, identified only as Sawas, was found severely injured, with facial and head wounds. Despite the emergency responders’ efforts to resuscitate him, Sawas succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the fuel truck, 52 year old Kiatisak recounted the moments leading up to the accident. He was en route from Rayong to Phra Pradaeng and was driving normally when the sedan suddenly crashed into the rear of his vehicle.
The impact dragged the car for about 5 metres and caused sparks to fly. Fearing an explosion due to the large quantity of fuel, Kiatisak quickly used a fire extinguisher to prevent the fire from spreading. He noted that if the collision had been direct to the tanker, an explosion would have been inevitable, reported KhaoSod.
Police are in the process of reviewing CCTV footage from the scene to further investigate the circumstances of the accident and proceed with legal action, reported KhaoSod.
In related news, a 22-wheel trailer truck overturned on a bridge over the Chao Phraya River, resulting in a continuous gas leak and a fatality. The accident, which occurred yesterday, March 19, required the use of a crane to recover the driver’s body, which was found severed in two parts.
In other news, a fatal bus crash involving a long-haul vehicle claimed the lives of its two drivers and injured 44 passengers yesterday morning in the Mueang district of Nakhon Ratchasima. The double-decker bus, run by Lotusphibul Tours, was travelling from Bung Kan to Bangkok when it collided with a steel support for a road sign.
