Malaysia Airlines has announced the return of direct flights between Kolkata and Kuala Lumpur after an 18-year hiatus. Starting from December 2, the airline will operate five weekly flights on this route using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This decision comes on the heels of the successful launch of daily flights to Amritsar last month, highlighting the airline’s commitment to bolstering its presence in key international markets.
The airline ceased its direct Kolkata-Kuala Lumpur flights in 2006. Sanjay Budhia, Malaysia’s honorary consul general in Kolkata, noted that visa-free entry coupled with direct flights from Kolkata would enhance trade and tourism between the two nations. This new route will increase Malaysia Airlines’ direct connections to India to ten destinations, including New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Amritsar, Trivandrum, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata.
Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi, Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Aviation Group, expressed enthusiasm about resuming flights to Kolkata. He stated that this move is crucial for improving connectivity between Malaysia and India, a significant market for the airline. With the addition of this route and increased frequencies from Amritsar, Malaysia Airlines now operates 76 weekly flights between the two countries.
