A man has been rushed to hospital after being shot in a car while waiting at traffic lights in Melbourne.

Shots were fired at the car near the corner of Commercial Dr and South Gippsland Hwy in Lynbrook in the city’s south-east at around 8.30pm on Wednesday evening.

It is still unclear whether the man was driving or whether there was a passenger in the car.

A family member took the injured man to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Detectives are investigating whether an Audi that crashed on Boundary Road Narre Warren almost an hour later is linked to the shooting.

The car fire is considered suspicious.

Detectives from the Armed Criminal Investigation Department have launched an investigation into the shooting in the car fire.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be established at this stage,” a police statement said.

No arrests have been made yet.
