The Leeds players took turns getting the euphoric Elland Road crowd going I predict a riot of the Kaiser Chiefs boomed.

Then boss Daniel Farke emerged and took turns fist-bumping all four stands. No one seemed to be in any hurry to get home, and were more than happy to take it all in.

It was a lap of honor and Leeds could still become champions. Leicester, the leaders, slunk away quickly, their pride damaged.

Farke has insisted that winning the Championship title is not that important as long as Leeds continue to rise.

It’s clear his players aren’t listening, judging by the spirit shown in this sensational late turnaround.

One moment Leicester had a twelve-point lead and the title race seemed to be over. The next, Leeds, were just six behind him and breathing right down their necks.

After Wout Faes’ early header, Leeds should have been dead and buried as Leicester spurned chance after chance in the second half. Patson Daka wrongly saw a goal disallowed for offside.

But Leeds bore the brunt and stayed in it. With ten minutes to go, Connor Roberts scored his first Leeds goal after Georginio Rutter burst into the Leicester penalty area and deflected the ball off a defender.

The noise had barely subsided when hero Archie Gray scored his first senior goal three minutes later. The youngster’s shot led to deflections from Faes and Hamza Choudhury towards goalkeeper Mads Hermansen on the wrong foot.

In stoppage time, Dan James drove a free kick against Patrick Bamford on the edge of the wall and Hermansen was helpless again.

This was the ninth consecutive league win for Farke’s team – also a club record set in 1931 – and it maintained their unbeaten season at home.

“We let the table take care of itself and we just want to deliver performances,” Farke said.

‘It’s a long race and there are still many races to go. It’s where you are after 46 games and I don’t think about what happens in ten weeks, I just focus on the next game.”

Leicester was floored. Of course, the title remains in their own hands – and they will certainly rise – but a lead that was 17 points on New Year’s Day is now uncomfortably small.

“I never thought we would finish this competition with ten or fifteen points more,” said coach Enzo Maresca. ‘I always said it was ‘PlayStation’. I said the difference would be very small.

“I feel bad if we don’t win, but with the way we played, I feel very happy tonight. It was clear to me, to a lot of people, that we dominated the game tonight.”

Maresca’s side took the lead when Faes appeared at the back post to head in after Patson Daka had flicked home Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s corner.

After the break, Daka saw a legitimate goal disallowed for offside, despite the ball coming to him off Rutter’s chest.

But Leicester were also guilty of wasting golden opportunities: Jannik Vestergaard headed against the crossbar and both Mavididi and Daka failed in one-on-one with Ilian Meslier.

How those misses would prove costly.
