KOTEX DENIES PARTNERSHIP WITH KAREN NYAMU FOR SCHOOLGIRL TAMPON SUPPLY

Kotex Kenya has publicly denied any plans to partner with Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu on providing tampons to schoolgirls. The sanitary towels manufacturer termed Nyamu’s claims as unfounded.

In a statement released over the weekend, Nyamu asserted that her foundation had engaged in discussions with Kotex Kenya to negotiate a partnership aimed at supplying free tampons to schools. And particularly in underprivileged areas such as Nairobi’s slums.

“My foundation has had a series of meetings with Kotex Kenya to negotiate a good deal so that we supply free tampons in schools, particularly in our slums and I’m so excited. I will be teaching girls in Nairobi how to use tampons,” Nyamu stated.

“Kotex confirms that no discussions or conversations have taken place with Karen Nyamu. Any claims of a partnership involving Kotex are entirely false,” the company affirmed.

Kotex Kenya reiterated its commitment to maintaining neutrality in political matters and expressed its ongoing support for initiatives that advance women’s welfare across the country.

The controversy surrounds Karen Nyamu’s insensitive remarks on proposed tax adjustments for sanitary pads in the recently withdrawn Finance Bill 2024. She suggested she was unconcerned about sanitary towel taxes because she uses tampons. And despite 65% of Kenyan women unable to afford sanitary pads.

Previously, Nyamu encouraged poor people not to worry about increased taxation, arguing that only the wealthy would be affected. Her statements have sparked widespread discussion and diverse reactions among Kenyans on social media.
