The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has denounced the violent treatment of Trevor Mureithi, a student at Multimedia University, during protests on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
The incident, captured in a disturbing video, showed police officers assaulting Trevor amidst a student demonstration.
“The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) condemns in the strongest terms possible the brutality meted on Trevor Mureithi, a student at Multimedia University, by police officers on Tuesday, 17th September 2024,” KNCHR stated.
Adding;
“The Commission continues to reiterate the constitutional rights of peaceful assembly and protest, emphasizing that every person has the right to assemble unarmed and demonstrate peacefully.”
KNCHR has called for immediate action, urging the Inspector General of Police to conduct thorough investigations into the matter. They have also demanded that the National Police Service take responsibility for Trevor’s medical expenses and ensure officers undergo mental wellness training to prevent future incidents.
“The Commission recommends the following actions to redress this violation: 1. Immediate investigations: The Commission calls on the Inspector General of Police to embark on immediate investigations of the actions that led to this unfortunate incident. The National police service should take administrative action and command responsibility for the officers involved and allow them to face the full force of the law. 2. Medical expenses,” KNCHR added.
KNCHR has encouraged anyone with information or concerns about violations during the protests to reach out through their dedicated channels.
Student beaten by police
The incident occurred during student protests that disrupted traffic along Magadi Road.
The video footage circulating widely depicts a group of police officers using teargas and batons against students, with one officer dropping a tear gas canister dangerously close to Trevor, narrowly avoiding a disastrous explosion.
The incident has stirred public outcry on the conduct of security forces and the protection of human rights during demonstrations in the country.
