Khalife claims Iranian roots could boost UK intelligence

Daniel Khalife expressed his dismay when informed that his Iranian heritage might hinder his chances of joining army intelligence, according to testimony in his trial. The 23-year-old former soldier shared with the jury his belief that his background could enhance national security, emphasising his desire for his country to recognise this potential.

At 17, Khalife was told by a troop commander that having an Iranian mother would bar him from passing the necessary security checks. He described his reaction as “quite devastated,” feeling uncertain about his future. When questioned by his barrister, Gul Nawaz Hussain, about whether he would have acted differently with more support from army leaders, Khalife responded negatively.

Asserting his patriotism, the former Royal Corps of Signals soldier stated that he believed his Iranian roots could be an asset to intelligence services. A month after the conversation with his commander, he devised a plan to work as a double agent, aiming to use his heritage for the benefit of national security.

In the previous day’s court session, Khalife, who also faces accusations of escaping from prison by clinging to the underside of a lorry using bedsheets, recounted a visit to Iran at age 15. He described the experience as unpleasant, having been taken there for four weeks by his “very strict” mother to witness life in the country. He lamented the state of Iran, stating his family opposes the regime.

Residing in Kingston, South West London, Khalife denies charges related to endangering state safety, acquiring information about armed forces personnel, and escaping from jail. The trial is ongoing at Woolwich Crown Court.
