Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has asserted that Kenyan youth have facilitated the creation of a new Cabinet and the restructuring of public service to drive necessary reforms, excluding those influenced by politicians or funded by NGOs.
His sentiments come despite widespread public outrage and planned demonstrations after President William Ruto reappointed several of his former cabinet secretaries to his newly reconstituted cabinet.
In a statement shared on his X account on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, Kaluma also noted that the economy is already showing positive signs in response to John Mbadi’s nomination as CS for National Treasury & Economic Planning highlighting that ODM has experts capable of driving progress.
“Kenya’s Gen Z patriots have allowed the formation of a new Cabinet and restructuring of public service to enable the government to work on the needed reforms, except those mobilised by politicians or funded by NGOs,” Kaluma stated.
“The economy is already responding positively to Hon. Mbadi’s nomination – ODM has experts!”
Kaluma compared the situation to the student-led protests in Bangladesh that led to the Prime Minister’s resignation.
“The Bangladeshi students have just handed the country back to the military, who had reluctantly handed over power to civilian rule. The military is back where they loved – ruling without law! There must be a calculated end game in every war,” he declared.
Gen Z not yet satisfied
The youth had demanded the dismissal of the entire cabinet. However, President Ruto opted to reshuffle most of his cabinet secretaries to different ministries, retaining only Kithure Kindiki in his previous position.
In response to Ruto’s broad-based nominated CSs, online campaigns have surged, with influencers urging the youth to join the planned demonstrations on August 8, 2024.
This call to action follows Parliament’s recent conclusion of the vetting process for the cabinet secretary nominees on Sunday, August 4, 2024.
Parliament is expected to give recommendations on whether to approve or disqualify Ruto’s nominees in the coming days.
Nane Nane
The Nane Nane protests, scheduled for Thursday, August 8, 2024, are organized primarily by Gen Z activists. These demonstrations are aimed at pushing for governmental reforms.
The protests are named “Nane Nane,” marking the date of the event.
The protests have been triggered by various issues including President Ruto’s decision to nominate 11 members from his previous cabinet to his newly reconstituted government despite calls for a complete overhaul.
