Kenya set to deploy 2nd contingent of 300 police officers to Haiti

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has announced that Kenya is set to deploy a second contingent of 300 police officers to Haiti.

In a statement posted on his official X account on Friday, October 25, 2024, Mudavadi, stated that the deployment aims at reinforcing efforts to combat gang control in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince and surrounding regions.

The Prime CS further added that the remaining officers will depart early next year, paving the way for the establishment of a full United Nations mission in the same year.

“Kenya is set to deploy a second contingent of 300 police officers to Haiti, aimed at reinforcing efforts to combat gang control in Port-au-Prince and surrounding regions. The remaining officers are scheduled to depart in early 2025, paving the way for the establishment of a full United Nations mission later in the year,” Musalia said.

Mudavadi’s meeting with Davis

In addition, Mudavadi disclosed that the Prime Minister of The Bahamas Philip Davis has noted Kenya’s police progress in Haiti.

He went on to say that the officers deployed in Haiti have managed to stabilize critical infrastructures in the country’s capital.

“During bilateral discussions with the Prime Minister of The Bahamas, H.E. @HonPhilipEDavis, I highlighted Kenya’s progress in Haiti. The mission has already succeeded in stabilizing critical infrastructure, including the airport, the national hospital, and several vital installations and major roadways throughout Port-au-Prince,” Mudavadi said.

Mudavadi also revealed that the Prime Minister commended Kenya’s efforts in assisting the Caribbean nation with the security situation adding that there has been a positive difference made by the Multinational Security Support Mission led by Commander Godfrey Otunge.

“H.E. Philip Edward expressed gratitude for Kenya’s assistance in Haiti’s security situation and acknowledged the 150 officers deployed last year, affirming the positive difference made by Kenya’s continued support,” Mudavadi stated.

Mudavadi called upon stakeholders who had previously pledged support to extend both financial and logistical resources to ensure the officers restore peace and normalcy in Haiti.

“I urged all stakeholders, particularly those who previously pledged support, alongside the United Nations, to extend both financial and logistical resources to ensure the mission’s sustained impact, with the ultimate goal of restoring peace and normalcy for our Caribbean brothers and sisters,” he added.
