A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for defilement.
Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in a statement issued on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, said that a Kandara court had handed Timothy Mwaura Mweru the life sentence after he was found guilty of defilement.
According to ODPP, the convict was charged with defilement on December 23, 2020, and after a full hearing, the court found that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Principal Prosecution Counsel Getrude Kiilu and Prosecution Counsel Hilda Jebet handled the case on behalf of the DPP.
Minor’s innocence
Kandara Principal Magistrate Eva Wambugu while sentencing Mwaura noted that he had taken away the minor’s innocence at the age of six.
The court also noted that the victim was left with psychological scars and that the accused was not remorseful even in his mitigation.
“A child predator has been locked away for life. In a case handled by Principal Prosecution Counsel Ms. Getrude Kiilu and Prosecution Counsel Ms Hilda Jebet, a Kandara court has handed Timothy Mwaura Mweru a life sentence after he was found guilty of defilement. The convict was charged with defilement on 23rd December 2020, and after a full hearing, the court found that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt,” the statement by the ODPP read in part.

Rise in defilement cases
Cases of defilement in the country have been on the rise in the recent past, with courts finding various culprits guilty.
Hola Resident Magistrate Benson Kabanga on Monday, October 28, 2024, sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the offence of defilement.
ODPP said that the man who hails from Tana River county had been found guilty of defiling his 9-year-old mentally challenged step-daughter.
According to the ODPP, the minor was lured into sexual activities by the convict when her mother was away.
“A stepfather in Tana River County has been jailed for life for defiling his 9-year-old mentally challenged step-daughter. Hola Resident Magistrate Benson Kabanga heard that the minor was lured into sexual activities by the convict when her mother was away,” the ODPP stated.
