Kamala Harris energises Democrats after Biden exits race

Vice President Kamala Harris has instilled confidence in the Democratic base early in her campaign, particularly among groups that had previously doubted Joe Biden’s capabilities.

The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research conducted a survey revealing that at least 80% of Democratic supporters would be satisfied if Harris became the presidential candidate. This survey following Biden’s withdrawal.

Before Biden’s withdrawal, AP-NORC conducted another poll indicating that only about 40% of Democratic members were satisfied with Biden as the nominee, especially after his debate with former President Donald Trump.

The rising popularity within the Democratic Party highlights the public’s preference for Harris’s new image and their belief in her potential to challenge Trump in November.

Gary Hines, a Democrat from Philadelphia, stated that he was initially unimpressed with Harris’s bid for the presidency but now believes she has demonstrated strong campaign abilities, which are more energizing than Biden’s. Hines, 68, expressed newfound enthusiasm for canvassing, which he had never considered before.

Americans increasingly see Harris as a capable presidential candidate. However, 56% of U.S. adults believe that Trump would likely win if he were to face Harris in the general election.

Lauren Schulman, a Democrat from Pompano Beach, Florida, mentioned that she admires Biden but fears a loss with him leading the ticket. She sees Harris as a “shining star,” noting her intelligence and youthful energy, which starkly contrasts with Trump.

Harris’s growing support is evident across various demographics. Approximately 70% of Black adults and 50% of Hispanic adults are satisfied with her as the nominee, a significant increase from previous figures. Among adults under 45, satisfaction with Harris stands at around 40%, up from 17% for Biden in July.

Bryan Seigler, a Democrat from Raleigh, North Carolina, appreciates Harris’s broad appeal and contrasts it with Trump, whom he now views as “the old guy.”

Harris’s favorability rating has slightly increased from 39% early this summer to 46%. Democratic opinions of Harris have improved, with 80% viewing her positively, up from 70% in June.

Harris could make history as the first woman, Black woman, South Asian American, and Asian American president. About 40% of Americans believe that electing a woman or a person of color would benefit the country, with higher support among Democrats.

Most Americans, 54%, are aware of Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 race, and approximately three-quarters approve, including majorities from both parties. Many Democrats felt Biden’s June 27 debate performance indicated he should not seek a second term due to concerns about his age and ability to campaign effectively.

Julian Castañeda, a Democrat from Pocatello, Idaho, felt Biden’s cognitive abilities were lacking during the debate, making his withdrawal appropriate. Biden’s endorsement of Harris as the Democratic nominee is somewhat divisive, with about half of U.S. adults in support, though Democrats largely approve. His decision to complete his presidential term enjoys similar support.

Biden’s withdrawal has not significantly altered his overall approval ratings, which remain steady at around 40%. About three-quarters of Democrats still view him positively.

Despite the optimism surrounding Harris’s campaign, most Americans believe Trump has the upper hand in the upcoming election. Approximately 90% of Republicans think Trump is more likely to win, while only about 70% of Democrats feel the same about Harris.
