Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool’s late disallowed equaliser against Toulouse was NOT handball – as Reds boss says he ‘didn’t see a contact with the arm’ of Alexis Mac Allister and questions a lack of a penalty for his beaten side

  • DOMINIC KING: I don’t understand what football is anymore – It all comes to the surface

Jurgen Klopp believes Alexis Mac Allister did not commit a handball in the build-up to Jarell Quansah’s disallowed goal against Toulouse.

The Liverpool manager saw Quansah’s late equalizer canceled out after referee Georgi Kabakov ruled that Mac Allister had previously handled the ball well.

It denied Liverpool a draw at the death and saw them lose 3-2 in France, abandoning their perfect Europa League record this season.

Klopp said: ‘I have only now seen the video again and for me it is not a handball, but how can I determine that? The ball goes to the chest and then I honestly don’t see any contact with the arm.

‘Maybe they had a different photo than me. It was quite a long time ago that we scored the goal and I thought, “Where’s the free kick?” I didn’t see it well, but I heard that in a different situation there could have been a penalty for us, I don’t know.

‘I’m actually a little more concerned about (the fact that) I wish we had played better, to be honest. That’s my main problem tonight. More aggressive in football.

‘It was well deserved to lose, because they won almost all the decisive challenges and battles. There are too many situations where we should have won the ball, but we didn’t.

‘Moreover, we gave the ball away easily at least twice. One was a goal, the other, I’m not sure if it was an allowed goal or a disallowed goal. Counter-attack, third goal, last line too deep. Defensively it just wasn’t good enough.

‘If you concede three goals, you have to score a lot of goals to win and of course we almost got a point here. That wouldn’t have made the game better, but it would have made it feel better at the table.

‘But that’s it now, so we have to accept it. Like I said: well deserved.’

It was a rollercoaster match in Toulouse and went differently than expected after Liverpool’s 5-1 defeat to their opponents at Anfield in October.

Aron Donnum gave the home team a surprising lead after 36 minutes and just before the hour mark Toulouse were two ahead thanks to a goal by Thijs Dallinga.

Klopp’s men showed fighting spirit and scored an own goal in the 73rd minute through a Cristian Casseres Jr. own goal, before the French team restored their two-goal lead thanks to Frank Magri three minutes later.

Diogo Jota’s goal in the 89th minute gave the Reds a glimmer of hope and they thought they had sealed a point with Quansah’s last-minute strike, but it was cruelly canceled out.
