Josip Stanisic has revealed he felt ‘pity’ for parent club Bayern Munich after scoring against Thomas Tuchel’s side in the 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

The 23-year-old is on a season-long loan at Bayern, who he joined as a youth player in 2017, and has become an integral part of Xabi Alonso’s team of title chasers.

While in the Premier League on-loan players are not allowed to play against their parent clubs, that rule does not apply in the Bundesliga and Stanisic started the weekend crunch clash.

‘Even though you are happy, you also feel a little sorry. I didn’t celebrate it out of respect.”

‘I wanted to prove it to myself first and foremost. I want to do my best for Bayer Leverkusen this season.

His comments come after Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel was upset that the attacking full-back was allowed to play in the match that could prove crucial in the title race.

Bayern needed to win to stay ahead of Leverkusen at the top of the table but slumped to a crushing defeat that has cast serious doubt on their title ambitions.

An aggravated Tuchel hit out at the rules for loan players in Germany, saying: ‘In England there is a nice rule where if you loan a player out, he or she is not allowed to play against you.

‘To me that makes more sense. Unfortunately, this rule does not exist in Germany’.

Stanisic, born in Munich, has made 20 appearances so far this season while on loan at Leverkusen.
