JOE MUCHIRI UPDATES FANS ON JOWIE IRUNGU’S LIFE IN PRISON

Social influencer Joe Muchiri recently shared an update on his friend Joseph “Jowie” Irungu, who is currently serving a death sentence at Kamiti Prison.

On August 13, Muchiri visited Jowie and reported that he is coping well with his prison life.

Muchiri wrote on his InstaStory, “Kijana ako sawa, ana pambana tu na amewasalimia,” which translates to, “The young man is OK, still pushing on, and he says Hi.”

Why is Jowie in Prison?

Jowie Irungu was sentenced to death on March 13, 2024, following his conviction for the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

Judge Grace Nzioka ruled that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence to establish Jowie’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

“Having considered the evidence in this matter, it is the finding of this court that the prosecution has adduced adequate evidence and met the threshold…” Nzioka stated.

“The court finds that the first accused person murdered the deceased,”

Monica Kimani was found brutally murdered at her Lamuria Gardens apartment in Nairobi on the night of September 19, 2018.

Jowie Irungu, who has challenged his death sentence, argues that the penalty is unconstitutional and inhumane.

His legal team has filed an appeal, claiming the death penalty constitutes “torture, cruel, inhumane,” and “a degrading form of punishment,” which is prohibited under Article 25 of the Kenyan Constitution.

Jowie’s Father Passes Away

In addition to his legal battles, Jowie’s father, Julius Irungu Mwangi, passed away on June 15, 2024, after a prolonged fight with cancer.

His wife, Annastacia Thaama, confirmed his death at Nakuru Level 5 Hospital Annex.

The family’s grief was compounded by Jowie’s sentencing, which accelerated his father’s illness.

Former TV news anchor Jacque Maribe, who was also charged in connection with Monica Kimani’s murder, was acquitted. Justice Nzioka noted that there was insufficient evidence to place Maribe at the crime scene, and thus murder was not an appropriate charge for her.

The status of Jowie Irungu’s sentencing appeal remains uncertain.
