Israel’s Gaza offensives result in 108 deaths, medics warn

Advertisment

Over the past fortnight, Israel’s increased air and ground offensives in Northern Gaza have resulted in nearly 108 fatalities and over 40 injuries as Hamas militants allegedly regroup. Medics involved in rescue efforts warned of “catastrophic consequences”. A local medic, Raheem Khedar, reported numerous parents and children among the deceased after a multistorey building and at least four adjacent houses were levelled. More than six individuals, including a child, died in a strike on a car in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza.

Mounir al-Bursh, the Director General of the Gazan Health Ministry, noted on X that the influx of wounded exacerbated “an already catastrophic situation for the health care system” in northern Gaza. Doctors Without Borders urged an immediate halt to the assaults on hospitals in northern Gaza, following claims from the health ministry that Israeli forces targeted two hospitals. The Israeli military denied these claims, stating it operated near one hospital but did not directly fire at it. They affirmed the use of precise munitions against a Hamas target in northern Gaza, describing the area as an active war zone while attempting to avoid harming civilians.

The Israeli operation in Jabaliya, northern Gaza, has entered its third week. Israel has ordered the entire northern Gaza population, including Gaza City, to move south since the war’s commencement, reiterating these orders this month. Approximately 400,000 people are believed to remain in northern Gaza.

The United Nations (UN) described the unfolding scenes in Gaza as “horrifying” and reiterated calls for an end to the conflict. The UN also called for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas and the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza. “The nightmare in Gaza is intensifying. Horrifying scenes are unfolding in the northern Strip amidst conflict, relentless Israeli strikes and an ever-worsening humanitarian crisis. Nowhere is safe in Gaza,” stated UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland. He added that peace requires courage, political will, and renewed diplomacy from all sides. “We owe it to the families suffering in Gaza and Israel. The war must stop now,” Wennesland concluded.
