Inter Miami’s playoff hopes are officially over after Lionel Messi failed to inspire his team to victory in a must-win game against Cincinnati, with fellow Argentine Alvaro Baral scoring late to end the season opener in MLS of the World Cup winner.

Messi, who was doubtful for this weekend’s game in South Florida, entered Saturday night’s game in the 55th minute for defender Tomas Aviles in an attacking substitution with the score still 0-0 at this moment.

But, about 23 minutes later, Barreal scored a fine save by Inter Miami goalkeeper Drake Callendar to give Cincinnati – the No. 1 seed in the MLS Eastern Conference – all three points.
