The Kenyan music industry has lost one of its most talented and promising artists, Brayo Atoto, who died on Saturday, August 12, 2023, following a road accident. The Ohangla star, who was popularly known as “The Tortoise Man” for his signature dance move, succumbed to his injuries at Kenyatta National Hospital, where he had been admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since August 7.
Brayo Atoto was involved in a horrific crash on his way to Kisumu from Nairobi, where he was scheduled to perform at a concert. His car collided with a bus belonging to Crown company, leaving him with severe head and chest injuries. He was rushed to the hospital by well-wishers, but his condition deteriorated over time.
The news of his death sent shockwaves across the country, especially among his fans and fellow musicians. Many took to social media to express their grief and pay tribute to the fallen hero. They praised him for his unique musical style, which blended traditional Luo rhythms with modern beats and lyrics. They also remembered him for his energetic and captivating performances, which always left the audience entertained and mesmerized.
Brayo Atoto started his musical career in 2019, when he released his debut album, “Kisumu Ber”. The album was a hit and catapulted him to fame and recognition. He went on to release more songs, such as “Nyathi Nyakach”, “Mama Nyar Siaya”, and “Kisumu Dala”. He also collaborated with other renowned artists, such as Emma Jalamo, Prince Indah, and Musa Jakadala. In 2021, Lady Maureen, the queen of Ohangla music, also passed away after a long battle with diabetes.
