Heavy rain causes flash flooding in Connecticut counties

Heavy rain has triggered flash flooding in New Haven and Fairfield counties, Connecticut, prompting ongoing water rescues, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service reported numerous water rescues and washouts in Central Fairfield to Northern New Haven Counties at 6:16 PM EDT.

Both counties have experienced 6 to 10 inches of rain, with an additional 2 inches expected Sunday night, according to the weather service.

A flash flood emergency remains in effect for parts of Fairfield and New Haven counties until midnight, with significant flooding and water rescues ongoing. This emergency covers Waterbury, Danbury, and the town of Fairfield.

Dangerous driving conditions led several cities and towns, including Stamford, Danbury, Southbury, and Naugatuck, to close roads.

Southbury Police advised residents to stay indoors as multiple roads were flooded. Crews are responding to emergencies and road closures across the town.

Heavy rainfall on Sunday afternoon caused a mudslide, triggering a gas leak near an apartment complex in Danbury that required evacuation, said Danbury Public Information Officer Erin Henry. Another apartment complex on Main Street in Danbury also faced evacuation due to flooding.

Connecticut’s Emergency Management and Homeland Security Department stated in a post on X that the state’s emergency operations centre is monitoring the situation. An urban search and rescue team has been dispatched to Southbury.

Flooding has also led to the closure of at least two state parks, according to the Connecticut State Parks’ X account.
