Hasina’s stay in India won’t harm Bangladesh-India relations

Mohamad Touhid Hossain, Bangladesh’s interim government’s foreign affairs advisor, stated on Monday that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s prolonged stay in India would not harm bilateral relations. He assured that Bangladesh aims to maintain robust ties with New Delhi.

Hossain responded to concerns about potential impacts on relations if Hasina’s stay in India extended. He dismissed the notion, saying, “This is a hypothetical question. Why would staying in a country affect relations with that country? There is no reason for that,” highlighting the significance of bilateral relations.

At 76, Hasina fled Dhaka due to widespread violence, seeking safety. She is currently in a secure location in India. An interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has been established to manage the transition and prepare for early elections.

Hossain emphasised that bilateral relations hinge on mutual interests. “Friendship doesn’t last if interests are harmed,” he remarked. He reiterated that both Bangladesh and India have their own interests guiding their relationship and assured that efforts would always aim to maintain good relations.

Previously, Hossain briefed diplomats in Dhaka, including Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma, on the country’s situation, seeking their support. He expressed confidence that international friends and partners would continue to support the interim government and the people of Bangladesh as they work towards a new future.
