Happy Mondays rock star Shaun Ryder has revealed he has left his wild partying and drug use behind and turned to Coronation Street.

Shaun, 61, recalls his past addictions before making the decision to become addicted to ‘cycling and Coronations Street’ instead.

The star rose to fame in the late 1980s as the lead singer of the Manchester rock band Happy Mondays, known for the songs Step On and Kinky Afro.

Shaun is also responsible for Gorillaz’ only number one single: their 2005 collaboration Dare.

But before that came a life of partying without limits, which Shaun, who has been sober for twenty years, remembers vividly.

He told The sun: ‘I’ve had some crazy moments. I was sitting in Dave Gahan’s house [in Los Angeles]. We were partying all night and we go back to his blunder – remember, this was 30 years ago – and Dave pulls out a huge jar of coke and heroin.

‘There was all kinds of things there. It was still the early hours and he said, ‘I’m going out. I’ll be right back. By then I was alone in his house. He’s gone for a few hours. I’m getting to know his medications well. Then I turned on the television: there’s Dave on Sunset Boulevard being chased by the police.

Recalling an excursion in Brazil, Shaun said, “I only know this as I was told about it. Apparently there was a funeral there and I ended up in a coffin, but I can’t remember that. They say I jumped in, laid down and started snorting coke. I don’t remember that.’

Shaun admitted he was addicted to crack, heroin and methamphetamine, but is now only addicted to ‘cycling and Coronation Street’.

Amazingly, Shaun also said he has had little to no relapse since quitting his drug habit.

He is kept busy by his wife Joanne and their family daughters Lulu, 15, and Pearl, 16, who have autism and ADHD.

Shaun, who has ADHD himself, has another four children by three more women – and most of them also have ADHD.

Speaking to The Sun again in 2023, Shaun revealed: ‘I have six children and five of them have it. That’s why I always work, because I have to pay for their damn therapy.’
