One woman is dead as her neighbor assists police in their investigation into a fatal stabbing in an affluent riverside suburb just before Christmas.

Police were called to a unit complex in Oxford Street, Hamilton in Brisbane’s north-east about 8.45am on Thursday after reports of a disturbance.

A seriously injured woman, 43, was found in a unit suffering from multiple wounds, including a stab wound to the chest.

Police and paramedics administered first aid before the woman was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where she died from her injuries.

A 55-year-old woman talks to the police. A murder investigation was launched.

“Police will allege that the two women knew each other but were not in a family environment,” a police statement read.

No charges have been filed at this early stage.

Police have now confirmed that the two women were neighbors.

Detective Inspector John Mison also confirmed that officers had previously visited the unit complex ‘a number of times’.

“Police received a triple-0 call this morning and we are currently investigating that information to try to determine an exact timeline of what happened,” he told reporters.

“But there is nothing at that time to indicate that there was any forced entry into the unit.”

Homicide detectives set up a crime scene at the unit complex and began knocking and interviewing shocked residents.

Forensic officers are also at the scene to collect evidence and search for the weapon involved in the alleged attack.

“I have a team of detectives on scene who will be conducting door knocks and speaking to witnesses in the area surrounding the location to get a full picture of what happened this morning,” Detective Mison said.

He will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday.
