Gogglebox Australia stars breakdown in tears after watching emotional Netflix documentary on free-diving

The doco tells the story of Irish safety diver Stephen Keenan, who lost his life by saving his girlfriend, Italian professional free diver Alessia Zecchini.

‘That is terrifying,’ Adam and Symon said as one of Alessia’s first dives was shown, where she swan 50 metres to the bottom of the ocean with no safety equipment or oxygen. 

Meanwhile Matt from the Dalton family said it is ‘the most stressful sport’ he’s ever watched in his life. 

The suspenseful doco tells Stephen and Allesia’s stories from their childhood and takes the viewers right up to when they meet and began training together. 

The couch critics were left in tears after viewing the heart-wrenching doco

It was always Alessia’s dream to complete a free-dive at the Arch of Dahab in Egypt, which is also known as The Blue Hole. 

The dangerous diving spot has claimed over 130 lives in recent years, and this is where Stephen sadly lost his life after saving Alessia. 

In the documentary, the narrator and interviewees talk about both Stephen and Alessia in the past tense, leading to viewers to believe that they both die. 

Gogglebox star Leanne said: ‘I feel like something’s going to go wrong’, while Tim replied: ‘I don’t like how everything is spoken in the past tense.’

The couch critics became very distressed when at the end of the movie, Stephen dies. 

He lost his life after Alessia attempted to dive The Blue Hole and he was her safety diver. 

Things went horribly wrong when a 20-second delay led to Stephen not meeting Alessia under the water, where he was supposed to help her with an underwater rope. 

When she couldn’t find the rope, she swam in the wrong direction, but Stephen followed her and guided her back to the surface.

He firstly made sure she made it up, and while she was revived he unfortunately was not and died on his way to hospital.  

The Gogglebox stars were very emotional after hearing about Stephen’s bravery and love for Alessia. 

‘He could’ve turned around and gone back up, but he chose to stay and find her,’ Symon said, while Adam replied: ‘He sacrificed his life for her.’

A very emotional Tim then said: ‘If that’s not the definition of a hero, giving your life for someone else…’
