The film was initially expected to gross $42 million, but did slightly better than expected.

The action adventure, which pairs new crew members McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard and Paul Rudd with OG stars Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts, grossed $16.4 million at the international box office for a total worldwide weekend debut of $61 million.

Frozen Empire is a sequel to 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, in which the Spengler family discovers their connection to the original Ghostbusters and heads to New York to team up with the veterans.

The new film’s box office receipts are good enough to put it ahead of 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which grossed $44 million in its opening weekend.

Dune: Part Two starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler and Florence Pugh finished in second place with $17.6 million. After three weeks of release, the sci-fi film has earned $233 in North America and $574 million worldwide.

Kung-Fu Panda 4 fell out of the top spot after two weeks and took third place this weekend with $16.8 million. To date, the animated film has earned $133 million domestically and $268 million worldwide.

Sydney Sweeney’s horror film Immaculate finished fourth with $5.3 million from 2,354 theaters.

Although Everyone But You’s career is red-hot, the horror genre is less dependent on big stars than other genres.

“They are driven by the hook: the evil doll, the evil smile, the invisible or silent presence, the found footage, the possessed child,” says David A. Gross of the film consultancy Franchise Entertainment Research, per Variety.

He continued, “That’s what scares the horror crowd. The hook isn’t entirely clear here.’
