Sam Kerr is officially back in business, unfortunately at the expense of her Matildas teammate Mackenzie Arnold after the Australian duo clashed during their Women’s Super League showdown between Chelsea and West Ham.

Kerr scored his first goal of the season in his first full game back, scoring a header past Arnold as Chelsea cruised to a 2-0 victory at their stronghold of Kingsmeadow.

Kerr missed most of the FIFA Women’s World Cup and played on one leg in the round of 16 after suffering a calf injury.

The severity of the injury meant Kerr missed the opening match of the Super League season and was substituted against Manchester City last week.

This time around, the 30-year-old showed she was back to her lethal best with a pinpoint header that allowed her Matilda teammate Arnold to latch on in the air.

It was a relief for Kerr, who has been frustrated with his injury since the end of last season.

“Delighted to be back at Kingsmeadow, back winning and back on the scoresheet,” Kerr posted on Instagram.

“I look good too,” partner Kristie Mewis replied with a winking emoji.

It was an all too familiar feeling for Arnold, however, with Kerr scoring 11 goals against West Ham in seven appearances – more goals than against any other club.

Kerr’s return to form and fitness has come as a relief to coach Emma Hayes.

Kerr won the Golden Boot title as the league’s top scorer two years in a row and was Chelsea’s top scorer last season.

Teammate Fran Kirby is Chelsea’s all-time top scorer and Hayes said it was nice to have both back on deck.

“It’s nice to have these two players and the telepathy that we all know, but we have to give them some time,” Hayes said.

“They only had two training sessions together. We always expect something magical from them. This is the beginning and we are moving in the right direction.

While Kerr took the chocolates from his Matildas teammate on this occasion, Arnold did not leave empty-handed.

The Australian goalkeeper managed to fend off lioness Lauren James when her shot hit Arnold’s legs.
