Gachagua praises media as he joins local radio station in anniversary celebration

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has heaped praised on the media as he joined a local radio station in celebrating their 21st anniversary.

Gachagua on media’s role

Gachagua who on Saturday, July 27, 2024, joined Inooro FM at Carnivore, Nairobi in their celebration said the media has become a core component of good governance and socioeconomic development.

“The media is founded on the cardinal functions of informing, educating and entertaining the public. Increasingly, the media has become a core component of good governance and socioeconomic development,” Gachagua said in a statement shared via his official X account.

DP Gachagua has been a big critic of the media for a very long time.

Gachagua’s previous attacks on media

On May 20, 2023, Gachagua launched a scathing attack against the media which he accused of misleading the country through biased reporting.

Gachagua was speaking at a thanksgiving ceremony in Nyandarua County when he claimed that the media had deliberately mud-slinging President William Ruto’s government.

In June 2023, Gachagua defended remarks made against a section of the media by the then Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria.

Kuria had attacked the Nation Media Group (NMG) accusing the media house of being “an opposition party”,  before making a roadside declaration directing government agencies to stop advertising with the media house, failure to which they would be sacked.

Leaders that accompanied Gachagua

The second in command during the Saturday night event enjoyed dancing mugithi tunes as local artistes from the Mt. Kenya region made performances.
