Former MLB All-Star Brandon Belt is scratching his head as to why he still hasn’t been picked up by a new team for the 2024 season.
The 35-year-old Belt, who entered free agency after a year with the Toronto Blue Jays, had to see Opening Day come and go as a free agent after failing to generate any serious interest heading into the new campaign.
And while he admits he’s considering retirement, the two-time World Series-winning first baseman, outfielder and design hitter is still puzzled by his lack of suitors.
“It kind of blew my mind,” he said during an appearance on the JD Bunkis Podcast on Friday.

“Honestly, I’ve hardly had any calls beyond the point where teams said, ‘Hey, we’re interested. That’s it, we’re just checking in.’ We haven’t even gotten around to talking to anyone or anything about money yet.
“I wish I had an answer for you. I just don’t.’
Belt signed a one-year contract with the Blue Jays after spending the first twelve years of his career with the San Francisco Giants, where he won the World Series in 2012 and 2014 and became an All-Star in 2016.
In his solo campaign in Toronto, he hit .254 with an .858 OPS and .369 on-base percentage in 103 games while serving primarily as a designated hitter in a lineup that also included George Springer, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette. .
The Texas man bounced back after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his knee in 2022, but despite his impressive year with the Blue Jays, he remains unsigned.
In addition to expressing his confusion, Belt also revealed that he would not have accepted a non-guaranteed deal that only included an invite to spring training.
“I don’t want to sound ungrateful or anything,” he continued. “It’s just that I feel like I’ve proven myself, especially over the last few years, that I don’t think I’m in that place right now.

“There was no reason for me to accept something like that, and I didn’t want to.”
Belt then added, “I feel like I’m in my prime, I think, in terms of approach and what I want to do in the game and what my goals are when I go out and play every night. So in that respect it’s stupid, but I don’t even know.
‘I don’t really have a good answer for how I feel about it either. For me, it just didn’t happen, and I don’t know how to really feel about it.”
