Former Maryland teacher arrested for alleged sexual abuse of minor student

Melissa Curtis, an erstwhile educator at Montgomery Village Middle School, Maryland, finds herself under arrest, facing multiple charges of sexual misconduct involving a minor. The accusations arose from her alleged sexual involvement with a 14-year-old pupil in 2015.

Currently aged 31, Curtis initiated her teaching career at Montgomery Village Middle School in 2014, moving on to Lakelands Park Middle School for a brief stint in 2016. Educated at Towson University, Curtis graduated with a degree in primary education in 2014. As of November 2023, she has yet to feature on an official Wikipedia page, though her arrest and the ensuing allegations have been extensively reported in various news outlets, including The Washington Post, Fox News, Daily Mail, MyMCMedia, and Shore News Network.

The initial spark for the investigation was provided by the victim, now an adult, who approached the Montgomery County Police in early October 2023. According to the charge sheet, Curtis and the eighth-grade student allegedly engaged in sexual activity at least 20 times, both at her place and his, between February and June 2015. The detectives are of the belief that there may be more victims and have appealed for them to come forward.

Curtis turned herself in on November 7, 2023, and was subsequently detained without bond pending her court appearance scheduled for November 8, 2023, to review her detention terms. The charges levelled against her include one count of sexual abuse of a minor and 14 counts of third-degree and fourth-degree sexual misconduct. The harshest punishment for a sexual abuse of a minor offence is a 25-year prison sentence, while the maximum penalty for a third-degree sexual misconduct is imprisonment for ten years and/or a fine of $10,000. For a fourth-degree sexual misconduct offence, the maximum sentence is a year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

The investigation was launched on October 4, 2023, when the victim reported the abuse to the police. He claimed that Curtis initiated contact through social media and text messages before inviting him to her house, where their first sexual encounter took place. He also reported being picked up from school or his house by Curtis and driven back to either her home or his, where they would engage in sex. He expressed feeling coerced into maintaining the relationship due to fear of the potential repercussions of discontinuing it.

Further evidence supporting the allegations was obtained when the police executed a search warrant on Curtis’s phone, uncovering communication between her and the victim. Additional interviews with Curtis’s former students revealed that she had inappropriate interactions with them as well.
