Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga’s son, Athman Mutunga, has passed away. He died on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at the age of 50, after undergoing four surgeries within two months at Coptic Hospital.
But sadly, Athman succumbed to his illness.
The family has not disclosed the specific illness that led to his passing.
In keeping with Muslim traditions, Athman was buried on Sunday, October 13, in Kitui County.
Chief Justice Martha Koome expressed her condolences, stating “On behalf of the Judiciary family and on my own behalf, I extend our deepest condolences to Emeritus Chief Justice Dr. Willy Mutunga and his family on the heartbreaking loss of his beloved son, Athman,” she stated.
Koome hoped that the family would find comfort in their cherished memories of Athman.
Athman Mutunga’s death has led to an outpouring of sympathy from leaders and legal professionals. Many, including legal scholar Professor Makau Mutua, have expressed their support for the former Chief Justice during this tough time.
Willy Mutunga, Kenya’s Chief Justice from 2011 to 2016 also clarified that a circulated photo by Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai was not of Athman, but rather his other son, Alamin, addressing potential confusion.
