Five injured in drunk driving simulation gone wrong at police event

A simulation to demonstrate the dangers of drunk driving turned into a real-life incident at a police event in New Jersey. During a National Night Out event in Fox Park, Wildwood, a golf cart showcasing the risks of impaired driving went out of control and injured five people, all of whom required hospitalisation, authorities reported on Wednesday.

The cart, operated by a teenager and a police officer, veered off an enclosed course marked by orange cones. Four adults and one child were injured. Firefighters at the event provided immediate medical assistance. The extent of their injuries was not disclosed. The injured were transported to Cape Regional Medical Center. Three of them were treated and discharged, while two remained hospitalised as of Wednesday.

The Wildwood Police Department expressed its regret in a Facebook post, stating, “This tragic incident is disconcerting to the entire City of Wildwood Police Department, and we would like to offer our sincere thoughts and prayers to the injured individuals.”

The annual event aims to strengthen police-community relations. The low-speed golf cart course simulating impaired driving has been a staple for the past two decades.

The incident is currently under investigation.
