Ex-All Black Byron Kelleher faces domestic violence claims

Controversy has shrouded the life of Byron Kelleher, the former All Blacks and Stade Toulouse rugby sensation, following claims made by his ex-fiancée about their past relationship. This has placed Kelleher under a new spotlight, separate from his esteemed rugby career, and has led to a public examination of his actions off the field in France.

Kelleher’s history with the sport is distinguished. Known for his dynamic and often enigmatic style of play, the ex-rugby player has left a mark on the game, representing the All Blacks in 57 test matches and scoring eight tries from 1999 to 2007. His club career was equally impressive, with a notable tenure at Toulouse where he achieved multiple French championships and a European cup before hanging up his boots in 2012.

Away from the field, the narrative of Byron Kelleher is intricately woven with details of his family life and upbringing. Born in Dunedin, New Zealand, on December 3, 1976, Kelleher’s heritage is a tapestry of Irish and Maori lineage, which has played a significant role in his life. Raised with two brothers and a sister, his love for rugby was nurtured at Otago Boys’ High School, which served as the launchpad for his rugby career.

Despite his sporting success, Kelleher’s personal life has been fraught with tumult. He has been romantically linked with a number of women from various walks of life, yet has never been married. Among these relationships, his engagement to Yuliana Desta, a make-up artist he met in Bali in 2018, stands out. Despite their engagement in 2019, the relationship was beleaguered by accusations of domestic violence. These allegations culminated in police involvement across three nations, and Desta claimed that Kelleher assaulted her on multiple occasions.

Their engagement ended in 2020 when Kelleher faced legal repercussions for domestic violence against another former partner in France. This pattern of discord also emerged in his previous relationship with Julie Novès, which concluded after a violent episode. In another notable past relationship, American adult film actress Kaylani Lei accused Kelleher of being abusive and unfaithful during their time together.

Beyond these troubled romantic entanglements, Kelleher’s post-rugby career has seen him engage in a variety of pursuits. His activities range from serving as an ambassador for Airbus to offering expertise as a rugby consultant on Sky Sports. Additionally, he has invested in his passion for hospitality, becoming a co-owner of a bar-restaurant in Toulouse.

Kelleher’s commitment to social causes is evident in his volunteer work with “L’Ombre du Baobab,” an NGO dedicated to improving the lives of children on Sumba Island. This aspect of his post-playing career demonstrates his willingness to give back and engage with communities beyond the rugby pitch.

As the former rugby star navigates the complexities of his personal and public life, the stark contrast between his celebrated athletic achievements and the troubling allegations brought forth by his ex-fiancée highlight a narrative that continues to evolve.
