November 19 marks International Men’s Day, a day to honour the efforts, contributions, and achievements of men everywhere.
This awareness day was designated by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a history lecturer at the University of the West Indies, to draw attention to issues surrounding men.
The first International Men’s Day was observed on November 19, 1999, in Trinidad and Tobago; the observance has since gained global recognition and is now marked in over 80 countries.

International Men’s Day also emphasizes strengthening relationships between genders and cultivating a culture of respect; it is also observed to raise awareness about men’s mental health while celebrating their socio-economic, cultural, and political contributions.
Each year, the day adopts a unique theme, focusing on topics such as kindness, responsibility, or mental health awareness.
The 2024 theme is ‘Positive Male Role Models.’ This theme highlights the positive value men bring to the world and the importance of fostering open discussion about men’s mental health and creating supportive environments where men can thrive.
Pillars for men’s day
The six pillars guiding this day include promoting positive male role models, acknowledging the positive impact men have on society, focusing on men’s health and well-being, highlighting discrimination faced by men, promoting gender equality, and working towards creating a safer and better world for all.
In recognition of this important day, several Kenyan organizations took to social media to share messages aimed at celebrating men and their contributions to society.
