Dr. James Mwangi, CEO of Equity Group Holdings, has joined the World Bank Group’s High-Level Advisory Council on Jobs. Launched during the 2024 World Bank-IMF Annual Meetings, the council aims to address the global job crisis, especially for young people and women in developing countries.
Mwangi’s appointment aligns with his focus on job creation as a driver of economic growth in Africa. Equity Group’s plan to create 50 million jobs by 2030 reflects this commitment.
With 1.2 billion people in the Global South entering the workforce over the next decade and only 420 million jobs projected, the council, co-chaired by Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, will work to close this gap.
Under Dr. Mwangi’s leadership, Equity Group has grown into a financial powerhouse, serving over 22 million customers with a market value of $1.4 billion. His efforts have earned him global recognition, but he remains focused on helping others.
Speaking about his appointment, Dr. Mwangi said he is honored to support efforts to create jobs for Africa’s youth. As part of the council, he will work closely with other members to develop solutions that can be scaled worldwide, ensuring more people have access to work and economic opportunities.
