England’s football stars pay tribute to Eriksson after his death at 76

England’s “Golden Generation” of football stars have paid tribute to former manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, who has died at 76. Eriksson had pancreatic cancer and revealed early in 2024 that he had only a year to live. On Monday, his family confirmed his passing, stating, “After a long illness, SGE died during the morning at home surrounded by family.” His close family includes daughter Lina, son Johan with wife Amana and granddaughter Sky, father Sven, girlfriend Yanisette with son Alcides, and brother Lars-Erik with wife Jumnong.

Eriksson, the first foreign manager of the England men’s football team in 2001, coached notable players such as David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, and Frank Lampard. Beckham, in a heartfelt tribute, described Eriksson as “a true gentleman.” He shared a video of them together, expressing gratitude for Eriksson’s passion, care, and calm demeanour. Beckham wrote, “We laughed, we cried, & we knew we were saying goodbye… I will forever hold these last memories of this day with you and your family… Thank you, Sven.”

Lampard also paid his respects on Instagram, calling Eriksson “an absolute gentleman” and expressing gratitude for the trust and support he received during his England career. Rooney, describing Eriksson as “a very special man,” thanked him for the memories and support.

Nancy Dell’Olio, Eriksson’s former partner, shared a series of photos and reflected on their relationship, stating, “I choose to remember the good times we shared and the moments that brought joy to our lives… Rest in peace, Sven.”

Prince William, president of the Football Association, expressed his sadness at Eriksson’s passing, highlighting his charisma and passion for football. Sir Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister, noted Eriksson’s significant contribution to English football. The FA’s chief executive, Mark Bullingham, announced that a tribute will be held during England’s next home game against Finland in the Nations League at Wembley on 10 September.

Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, praised Eriksson as a “great innovator and a true ambassador of our beautiful game,” acknowledging his record of winning titles in Sweden, Italy, and Portugal, and his international career spanning four continents.

Eriksson, who managed England until the 2006 World Cup, later coached Mexico, the Ivory Coast, and English clubs Manchester City and Leicester City. He started his career as a PE teacher in a small Swedish town. Clubs such as Man City, Lazio, and IFK Goteborg, along with the Swedish Football Association, honoured his contributions to football.

Former players including Gary Lineker, Peter Crouch, Rio Ferdinand, David James, and Michael Owen also paid their respects. Current England captain Harry Kane acknowledged Eriksson’s respect and admiration among players.

Eriksson stepped down as sporting director at Swedish club Karlstad in February 2023 due to health issues. After announcing his cancer diagnosis, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by leading Liverpool Legends in a charity match against Ajax at Anfield in March, which Liverpool won 4-2. Liverpool FC expressed their condolences, stating, “The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Sven’s family and friends at this extremely sad time.”

In his final statements, Eriksson hoped to be remembered as “a good man” and encouraged people to smile and live life fully. He concluded, “Don’t be sorry, smile. Thank you for everything, coaches, players, the crowds, it’s been fantastic. Take care of yourself and take care of your life. And live it. Bye.”
