Sean “Diddy” Combs intends to contest the Manhattan judge’s decision to detain him without bail ahead of his trial on sex trafficking and racketeering.

On Monday, Combs, 54, submitted a notice of appeal to the Southern District of New York, marking the initial step to secure his release. The timeline for the official appeal and subsequent hearing remains uncertain.

Apprehended at a Manhattan hotel on September 16, Combs is now being held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, known for housing notorious figures like R. Kelly, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Sam Bankman-Fried.

For precautionary reasons, Combs is currently on suicide watch; however, his legal team maintains he is mentally sound and preparing his defence.

Diddy’s defence preparations

Attorney Marc Agnifilo stated that Combs is resolute and engaged in preparing his case. Joining Agnifilo in Combs’ defence are Anthony Ricco, who successfully defended an NYPD officer in a high-profile case, and Alexandra Shapiro, currently handling Bankman-Fried’s appeal.

Prosecutors labelled Combs a “serial abuser and a serial obstructer” during his initial bail hearing, citing a 2016 incident where Diddy allegedly attempted to bribe hotel security to conceal an assault on his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura. Federal Magistrate Judge Robyn Tarnofsky sided with the prosecutors and ordered Combs’ detention.

Combs faces accusations of orchestrating disturbing events he referred to as “Freak Offs.” These events involve women being drugged and coerced into prolonged sexual activities with male prostitutes.

The federal complaint alleges drugs were used to ensure compliance, with Combs filming and deriving pleasure from the sessions.

The operation purportedly involved Combs’ employees, who facilitated travel, booked hotel rooms, and provided necessary supplies for the events. Combs also faces charges of racketeering conspiracy, fraud, and coercion for prostitution, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

Diddy’s next court date is set to be October 9.
