Authorities say a desperate search is underway for a missing U.S. Navy helicopter in San Diego, California.

According to CBS8, there are at least five Marines on board the plane.

The helicopter took off from Creech Air Force Base near Las Vegas on Tuesday evening and was en route to the Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar when it went missing.

Cal Fire said a call came in about the missing helicopter at 2:20 a.m. local time.

The CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter was last reported north of Interstate 8 and Kitchen Road, southeast of Descanso.

The area is currently covered in snow, complicating the search, officials said.

The sheriff’s department said it received a call shortly before 2 a.m. Monday and sent its own helicopter to search, but the plane was unable to reach the area due to a severe weather system affecting the region.

Multiple agencies are involved in the search, including the Border Police.
