Days of Our Lives star Greg Vaughan shared on Instagram Thursday that he suffered a medical emergency while on vacation with his family.

The 50-year-old actor shared with fans online that he was hospitalized after falling ill during a trip to Colorado with his sons.

“Life is like a box of chocolates, ‘you never know what you’re going to get!’” he joked as he began a lengthy caption. ‘I’ve said more than a few times: it really feels like I’m working and living in a soap opera!’

He shared photos of himself resting in a doctor’s office and explained that he lost two days during a spring break trip with his sons due to severe altitude sickness.

He started to explain, “Father & Sons Colorado Spring Break! Here we go! I felt somewhat tired after one day, experienced shortness of breath when climbing a few flights of stairs, wheezing, some congestion after some cold snow conditions, and developed a headache. I had been hydrating all day, so late into the night I drank a bottle of Pedialyte and NyQuil headed out to be ready to tackle BRECK with the boys the next morning!”

The entertainer continued, “Unfortunately it was a night of tossing, turning, no sleep, coughing, dry heaving and my head felt like it was in a walnut cracker! Disappointed, the morning arrived and I had to tell my boys and our friends who had just arrived that I was staying home to rest and do my best for our last days! Which only got worse as the day went on! I was mentally spinning and trying not to think about having another horrible night or losing another day with my boys… but I did.”

Noticing that his health was not improving, he sought medical attention and was diagnosed with ‘severe altitude sickness’.

‘Two full days passed, enough was enough, I finally surrendered and went to A&E and to my horror I learned that I was suffering from severe altitude sickness!’ he wrote to fans.

‘My blood oxygen was 54% and my lungs were full of fluid! Blood oxygen, also called oxygen saturation, represents the percentage of hemoglobin in your red blood cells that carries oxygen. Most people have an oxygen level of 95-100%…’

After treatment, Greg was eventually released.

“Well, four hours later, with a few IV bags and oxygen tank strapped to my face, I was told to get off the mountain immediately!

‘But we couldn’t, we still had a day to go and wanted the boys to enjoy their last day on the hilltops!’ he shared.

Then he added, “I chose to go home with an oxygen tank, a nice laugh for everyone, and I know this will follow, but my boys took care of their old man and luckily they had friends on this trip !’

‘As they say, ‘take a deep breath and smell the roses!’

‘That’s really something we should remember and appreciate!’
