Dave Hughes opens up about freak surfing injury and how much he loves ‘Green Whistle’ pain relief: ‘I wish they sold it in 7-Eleven’

Dave Hughes has opened up about his healing journey after suffering a painful surfing injury on New Year’s Eve.

The radio veteran, 53, appeared on Today Extra on Tuesday morning and told presenters he now swears by Penthrox pain relief, nicknamed ‘Green Whistle’.

‘It was so much pain, traumatic. The Green Whistle, I wish they sold it at 7-Eleven. I tell you, it took me hours to get it, I looked for relief wherever I could find it,” he began.

‘My shoulder is recovering. The accident was New Year’s Day and I had surgery two weeks ago.’

In December, the comedian was rushed to hospital after dislocating his shoulder on a Queensland beach, resulting in nerve damage and leaving him in excruciating pain.

Hughes then said that because his dominant hand was in a sling for several months, he had to make quite a few adjustments.

“I learned to do things left-handed for a while.”

In January, Hughes opened up about his ‘tragic’ surfing accident in Surfers Paradise, which saw him taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The 53-year-old comedian dislocated his shoulder during a day out at the beach, causing ‘nerve damage’ and excruciating pain.

The radio host revealed the gruesome details of the horrific Gold Coast incident during his 2DayFm Breakfast show Hughesy, Ed & Erin.

Hughesy started by saying that the whole incident happened during his first surfing lesson, when he failed to ‘fall backwards’ off his board as instructed.

“I didn’t listen properly,” the media personality said, revealing that he instead fell forward, which led to his “too big” board crashing into his back and dislocating his shoulder.

‘I immediately thought: I’m in trouble here. I think: am I going to drown?’ he said.

Hughesy went on to joke: ‘The only thing that kept me from drowning was being in knee-deep water,’ before adding that his shoulder was ‘under my pocket’.

Fortunately, he was eventually able to receive treatment and is now recovering as he prepares for his upcoming stand-up comedy tour called Fully Furnished.
